Beckham became the latest member of Real Madrid’s Galacticos (superstars) when he joined the Merengues in July 2003. He would link-up with Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, and Ronaldo who had joined one by one in mega-money deals in each of the previous three summers.
President Florentino Perez seemed intent on producing soccer’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters, and Beckham and his team-mates were the talk of La Liga for several years.
However, despite the star names, Beckham won just one trophy in his four years at the Bernabeu: the 2007 Liga title.
