The Hamburg striker gave his side the lead against Uruguay in the opener and netted the winner against Mexico. Guerrero softened the blow of losing Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfán through injury before the tournament, and scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 third/fourth place play-off win over Venezuela.

2. Luis Suarez (Uruguay) 4 goals

Suarez’s first three goals came against Peru. He netted in the opening match, a 1-1 draw, and added two more in the semi-finals as Uruguay booked their place in the final. He scored from close range, then rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. He put Uruguay ahead against Paraguay in the final as his side eased to a 3-0 win
