With Fans Like These: Beckham Returns to Los Angeles

From Joshua Robinson, About.com GuideJuly 20, 2009

Follow me on:

Last Thursday, David Beckham made his return to the Los Angeles Galaxy and M.L.S. with a forgettable performance against the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium. But on Sunday, he finally came face-to-face with his home fans.

It had been six months since he left on a half-season loan to A.C. Milan and two weeks since his headline spat with teammate Landon Donovan. Neither incident was sitting particularly well with the fans. And in his first game back, they let him know.

Beckham was repeatedly booed — just as he had been in New York — and fans all over the stadium held up angry signs, like “Go home fraud” and “23: Repent.” It appeared they even got to him by half-time. According to the Associated Press, there was an unsavory moment after the referee blew his whistle for the break:

As Beckham left the field at halftime, he went over to the section where one of the team's support groups holds court and appeared to shout something. The fan jumped down from the seating section and was subdued by security before being escorted off the field.

Beckham will undoubtedly return to Europe once the M.L.S. season — including its six more home games — is up. The problem is, he hasn’t been subtle about it.

So when the fans who bought into the whole Beckham frenzy two years ago greet him like that, can you really blame them?

Good for the fans! Beckham possibly has done more harm than good. It’s not about the LA Galaxy, it about socccer in the US. All his flip flops play right into the heands of the socccer haters.

Ah well,
We back home in the UK have
always known that Mr. Beckham
believes in his own publicity of
invincability and soccer
prowess. Here its a well known
fact that ‘over-the-hill’
soccer players who are slipping
out of the ‘A’ league start milking
the cash and publicity of places
such as the US because soccer is
still in its infancy over there.
Yes, Beckham ‘plays’ for Inter Milan,
sometime maybe for England occasionally but the
reality is his glory days are over.
The UK has and obviously uses younger, faster, fitter equally talented players its the name of the
game. It is sad to see Beckham however, getting involved in such vulgar displays years ago he wouldn’t of dreamt of behaving so badly. I guess ’success’ Hollywood
style has gone to his head…
Here he would probably be met with “Hello mate didn’t you used to be …?” And play for “…?”
He is a nice lad but not the brightest button in the box who has allowed money to dominate his life.
