Sevilla FC was founded in 1905 and is the oldest football club to be based in Seville. Recently, Sevilla have enjoyed a period of success and as they began the 2007-08 season they are the holders of three major pieces of silverware, namely, the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the prestigious Copa del Rey.
Sevilla didn't take long to establish winning ways lifting the Copa del Seville in 1914. However, Sevilla didnt secure a major trophy until they lifted the Copa del Rey in 1935 and this achievement propelled the club onto challenge for their first La Liga title in the 1939-40 season narrowly missing out to Atletico Aviacion. Sevillas strong league form continued into the 1940's with the club again finishing in second place in the 1942-43 season, the La Liga title proving to be elusive. Sevilla persisted and were finally rewarded with their first and only La Liga title at the end of the 1945-46 season.
Sevilla struggled to maintain the impressive form that the club had enjoyed in the 1940's and in the 1960's a period of decline set in leading to their eventual relegation from La Liga. Sevilla immediately bounced back to the top flight of Spanish football but endured the same situation in the 1970s. However, a restructuring movement brought new found stability to Sevilla and the club remained in and around the mid table mark until the late 1990s when they once again suffered the pain of relegation. Sevilla were destined to go up and down between the top two divisions in the ensuing years but under new Coach Caparros the club were led back to former glory reaching the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and qualifying for the UEFA Cup.
Sevilla impressed on the European stage and succeeded in lifting the 2006 UEFA Cup defeating Middlesbrough in the final. This winning trend continued as Sevilla secured the 2006 Super Cup beating Barcelona in the final. Despite their success in cup competitions this did not transcend to the League as Sevilla finished in fifth place.
In 2007 Sevilla were again successful on the European stage as they lifted the UEFA Cup for the second successive season beating fellow La Liga side Espanyol in the final after a penalty shoot-out. The icing on top of the cake for Sevilla arrived in the form of the club lifting the 2007 Copa del Rey beating Getafe in the final and establishing themselves as a force in both domestic and European football.
