Henry's reputation was undoubtedly tarnished on November 18, 2009 as his blatant handball led to William Gallas' goal that sent France through to the World Cup finals at Republic of Ireland’s expense in a two-legged play-off.

The Irish were irate after Henry stuck out a sly hand to keep the ball from going out of play, before passing to Gallas who equalized to make it 1-1 on the night and send Les Bleus through 2-1 on aggregate.

Henry has tended to portray himself as a genuine sportsman throughout his career, so his actions here disappointed many observers.

But there were also those who argued that handballs can occur at any time in a match and that it was Swedish referee Martin Hansson's job to spot the offense.

Henry could do little but admit to the handball afterwards and the Irish attempted to get the match replayed, but to no avail.
