Tottenham Hotspur are regarded as one of England's traditional exponents of the beautiful game.

There have been signs over the last few years that the club are making inroads in their quest to revive the glory days of the 1960s when they won the league and cup double.

While success of that magnitude may be a little way off, Spurs broke the longstanding 'big four' hegemony of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool by finishing fourth in the 2009-10 season and reaching the Champions League.

One of the most financially stable clubs in England, Spurs have the resources to build on their success under Harry Redknapp, who has turned the Lilywhites from relegation strugglers to European contenders.

A Little History:

The club was formed by boys from the Hotspur Cricket Club and the local grammar club in 1882. Originally called Hotspur FC, the name was changed to Tottenham Hotspur in 1884.

Despite a title win in the 1950-51 season, Spurs only became perceived as a big club when Yorkshireman Bill Nicholson took over in 1958.

Spurs won eight major trophies in his 16 years at the club, including that famous double in 1961. They also became the first British team to win a European competition in 1963 when they lifted the Fairs Cup (now the Europa League).

The early 1980s was also a glorious time, with Spurs following up FA Cup successes in 1981 and 82 with a UEFA Cup triumph in 1984. The likes of Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles were inspirational figures in the success and are regarded as key players in the club's history.

Spurs and their fans have developed a great affinity with the FA Cup, but have failed to win the competition since 1991 and the days of Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne.

League Cups in 1999 and 2008 are the only silverware to come the club's way since the early 90s.
