Lazio were originally founded in 1900 as Societa Sportiva Lazio and based in the Italian city of Rome. Lazio are one of the most prominent clubs involved in Italian football and have enjoyed domestic and european success throughout their history.
Since the clubs inception in 1900 Lazio quickly became a well organised and structured club joining League competitions in 1912. Lazio, as a club, have a strong sense of pride and this was evident in 1927 when the club resisted the facist attempts to merge all of Romes teams under one common banner, later to become AS Roma.
Lazio competed in the first Serie A in 1929 and slowly began to extend their influence among the best clubs in Italy, finishing in second place in 1937. After the Second World War Lazio struggled to impose themselves in the League however the club enjoyed a small taste of success lifting the Italian Cup in 1958. Lazio suffered relegation to Serie B for the first time in 1961 with the club returning to the top tier after two years but the 1960s were overall to prove unfruitful for the club.
Although the 1970s began with a relegation Lazio were back in Serie A for the beginning of the 1972-73 season. During this period Lazios talents shone as they competed strongly against teams such as AC Milan and Juventus for the League title. Lazio finally secured their first League title in the 1973-74 season stamping their authority as serious contenders.
The 1980s saw Lazio relegated to Serie B due to a betting scandal that enveloped the club and a second betting scandal this time surrounding a Lazio player signalled a points deduction highlighting the view that the 1980s contained some of the darkest days in the clubs history. The 1990s saw a revival at the club as major world players such as Veron, Christian Vieri and Crespo joined Lazio. During the early 1990s Lazio strongly challenged for the League title narrowly missing out on each occasion. However, in 2000 Lazio finally succeeded in lifting their second scudetto along with the Italian Cup proving their strength at the top level of Italian football.
In addition to domestic success Lazio impressed in Europe during these years lifting the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1999 along with the European Super Cup beating Manchester United in the final. Recently Lazio have been dogged by a match fixing scandal but this didnt affect the team on the pitch as Lazio finished in third place at the end of the 2006-07 season.
