Deflection

By , About.com Guide

Definition: A deflection is the ricochet of a ball after it hits a player. When an attacking player hits a shot, it is common for the ball to take a deflection off a member of the opposition team, and change course, often resulting in a goal. If a defending team is lucky, a goal bound shot can take a deflection and go off course.

If a shot is going off target and it hits a defender and goes into the goal, an own goal will be given to the defender. If a striker's shot is going on target when it deflects off a defender and goes in, the striker will be awarded the goal.

Also Known As: Ricochet

Examples: The striker hit a shot which deflected off the defender into the goal.
