Definition: A method of deciding a match in a knockout tournament that has ended level. Thirty minutes extra time is generally played before the match goes to a penalty shootout if the score is still even after this period. Each team is allowed five penalty shots at the goalkeeper, although the shootout can be won if one team has scored each of their first three penalties and the opposition has missed all of theirs.
If the score is level after five penalties each, the shootout will go into sudden death where each team takes a further one penalty each, repeated until only one team scores.
Also Known As: Shootout, Penalties, Penalty Kicks.
