Definition: The section of a team whose job it is to link defense and offense. It is common that three, four or five midfielders operate in a team at any one time, and it is their job to both defend and attack. Some midfielders may be instructed to defend more (defensive/holding midfielders), while others are told to attack (attacking midfielders).
Midfielders are required to get forward and contribute to goals, but also help out their defenders when the team does not have the ball.
