Definition: An unobstructed kick of a stationary ball awarded for an infringement by an opposing player. Free kicks are most commonly awarded for fouls, handballs or offsides.
A free kick can either be taken direct, from which a goal can be scored, or indirect, meaning a touch must be made by at least one other player before a goal can be allowed.
When a free-kick is taken, opposition players are supposed to be ten yards away from the ball, unless the kicker is aiming to gain an advantage by taking the free-kick quickly.
Also Known As: Set-Piece, Dead Ball.
