Republic of Ireland
Nickname: The Boys in Green
Football Association of Ireland - From 1882 until 1950 the Ireland national team was governed by the Irish Football Association however in 1921 their right to field an all-Ireland team was challenged by the rival Dublin based Football Association of Ireland. Both associations claimed jurisdiction over the whole of Ireland and selected players from all over. This tense situation was finally solved when FIFA intervened after the 1950 World Cup and decreed that in future the IFA would compete as Northern Ireland and the FAI would compete as the Republic of Ireland.
