Michael Owen
Is it a perpetual yearning for the underdog that has led me to choose yet another player who has seen his career decimated in recent years by major injuries as the player to watch in 2007/2008 for Newcastle United? Maybe it's the feeling that things can really only get better for a player who was pushed out of the club he grew up at and loved, cruelly left on the sidelines at the foreign club he moved to despite scoring goals when required and has since spent more man hours on the treatment table than the training pitch on his return to English football.

Michael Owen needs no introduction for anyone who has witnessed any English football over the past ten years. The former Liverpool boy wonder is now an experienced and mostly crocked 27 years of age and time is running out if he really wants to fulfil the potential most graphically highlighted by his wonder goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

Now under yet another new Newcastle manager in Sam Allardyce, Owen should get the support he needs when he does get fit although I maybe should have included the word "if" in that last statement instead of "when". Newcastle needs him and he needs Newcastle. Let's hope their physio keeps Owen working.
