Long touted around the top clubs in Europe, Benni McCarthy looked set for a career of being the nearly man when it came to playing in the top leagues. Blackburn Rovers capitalised on his desire to play in the English Premiership and in a canny piece of transfer business took the South African goalgetter from FC Porto to Lancashire for only £2.5m.

It took McCarthy only a short time to repay the money with 19 goals in 36 games for Blackburn in his first season and a blossoming reputation as one of the top strikers on show in the English game.

His ill-informed attempts at engineering a move to Chelsea during the summer didn't bear fruit but alongisde new signing Roque Santa Cruz at Blackburn McCarthy should finally have a strike partner worthy of playing alongside him and if last season is anything to go by then Premiership defences better watch out again in 2007/2008.
