Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and founded in 1892 Newcastle United are highly ranked as one of the most successful clubs in English football history.
The Club quickly imposed their presence in the early years since the formation of the Football League winning the League Championship on three occasions during the 1900s leading them to be considered as one of the best teams in the country. During this period Newcastle appeared in five FA Cap finals however only secured silverware on one occasion.
Major success on this scale wasn't seen again until the 1950's when the club lifted the FA trophy three times within a five year period. As a result Newcastle gained a high profile in English Football fuelled by talent from players such as Jackie Milburn and Bobby Mitchell.
Newcastle qualified for Europe for the first time in 1968 and caused an uproar when in the following year they secured the inter-cities Fair's Cup which only two years later became known as the UEFA Cup.
However, what goes up must go down and the 1980's signalled a dramatic decline as the club languished in the Second Division. A series of managers were unable to improve the clubs fortunes and it wasn't until Arthur Cox arrived with ex- England captain Kevin Keegan that the club were steered back to the First Division.
Kevin Keegan returned to the club as manager in 1992 and led the team who were struggling in Division Two to a dramatic upwards turn in form. This amazing progress resulted in Newcastle gaining promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 1992-1993 season. With Keegan at the helm Newcastles form held and they impressed with sublime attacking play during their first season back in the top flight.
The club came frustratingly close to winning the Premier League in the 1995-1996 season losing out to rivals Manchester United. Despite good league form, participation in the Champion's League and an FA Cup final, Newcastle did not lift any trophies. Kenny Dalglish and Ruud Gullit both had spells as manager but both failed to bring silverware to the club.
During the 2006-2007 season Newcastle failed to find form and their poor performances led to Glenn Roeder's resignation. Sam Allardyce was appointed as manager in May 2007 and hopes are high that he is the man to bring success back to Newcastle.
Newcastle are widely renowned for their large and loyal fanbase and their bitter rivalry with neighbours Sunderland.
