Lazio will have found their dreams of an easy start in Greece cruelly broken as they just about scraped a 1-1 draw thanks to defender Luciano Zauri's 77th minute equaliser.
Raul's opener for Real Madrid's lead against Werder Bremen was shortlived as the Germans equalised a minute later and it was left to Dutch goal machine Ruud Van Nistlerooy to save the day and keep the three points at the Santiago Bernabeu with a second half strike to make the result 2-1 to the nine times European champions.

It was the Ruud Van Nistlerooy and Goran Pandev show at the Olimpico Stadium in Rome as one scored then the other then one scored again and the other equalised again to give both clubs a share of the spoils and an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Werder Bremen seemed to have learned nothing from Lazio's slack approach to their game against Olympiakos and the Greek side punished Bremen in the best possible way, going behind to a first half goal from Almeida before scoring three in the last 18 minutes to tke the three points.

Real Madrid came from behind to spank Olympiakos in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium with goals from Raul, two from Robinho and a late coup de grace from Balboa.
Lazio slumped to defeat in Germany against Werder Bremen and with only two points on the board after three games now prop up the Group C table.

A game full of incident at the Stadio Olimpico saw Lazio striker Tommaso Rocchi score two and miss a penalty before a late run of red cards saw Lazio's Cribari sent off for a foul which also resulted in a penalty for Werder Bremen, duly converted by Diego who only minutes later also received his marching orders for dissent.
Real Madrid stayed top with a disappointing scoreless draw away to Olympiakos which saw the Greeks fall to third in the group table.

In one of the competition's tightest groups it was all down to the last round of games to decide which clubs would progress. Real Madrid beat Lazio despite a late Roman comeback and with Olympiakos putting Werder Bremen's challenge to the sword in Greece, the Spaniards and Greeks were the two sides to deservedly go through with Werder Bremen dropping into the UEFA Cup.
