Champion's League 2008 Draw Sets Out Roadmap To The Final

Monday March 17, 2008
The draw for the quarter and semi-finals of the 2008 UEFA Champion's League has given us the roadmap that clubs will have to take to negotiate their way to the final in Moscow in May and, as usual, there have been some very interesting draws thrown up.

2005 winners and last season's beaten finalists Liverpool face countrymen Arsenal who themselves fell at the final hurdle to Barcelona in 2006. Liverpool have twice faced Chelsea in the semi-finals in the past three years and could do so again if Avram Grant's men can find their way past Turkish side Fenerbahce, currently coached by Brazilian midfield legend Zico. If Chelsea do progress past the Turks then an English side is guaranteed a Champion's League final berth.

2006 champions FC Barcelona face German side Schalke 04 while fourth English competitors and 1999 winners Manchester United will play AS Roma (yet again) after facing the Italians in the group stages and in last season's competition as well. The winners of Barca/Schalke will then play the winners of Manchester United/Roma in the other semi-final.

The English clubs won't like having to play each other so much in the first track but conversely Manchester United, who can feel they got one of the easier quarter final draws, may still have to get past Barcelona at the semi-final stage if both clubs make it that far. It's certainly an intriguing draw.
