Platini Against Poaching Of Young Players
Sunday March 2, 2008
Reggina's attempts to get FIFA and UEFA on their side in their recent row with Chelsea over poaching young players seems to have worked as UEFA president Michel Platini vowed to help eradicate the culture of young player poaching in Europe.
The Reggina incident involving 15-year-old defender Vincenzo Camilleri who went to hold talks with Chelsea in London without Reggina's permission is the latest in a long line of such incidents whereby big clubs use their pulling power to grab promising players from all over Europe without having to compensate the club that has brought them up to that level.
Platini says he will lobby politicians to help stop the practice and has pointed to his own career where he only moved to Juventus in Italy as a 27 year old established European star and didn't jump ship on his French club Nancy at a young age when they had provided him with his footballing education in the first place.
