Lionel Messi broke Gerd Mueller's record for goals in a calendar year on Sunday with two first-half strikes against Real Betis.
Mueller's record of 85 goals had stood for 40 years, but Messi has completed a phenomenal year by surpassing the former West Germany and Bayern Munich striker.
Messi now sits on 86 goals in 2012 - 74 for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina - with two Liga matches and a Copa del Rey tie still to go.
There was concern in some quarters that Barca had rushed the 25-year-old back from injury after he was stretchered off against Benfica last week. But Messi showed few ill-effects as he produced a driving run into the box to finish into the bottom right hand corner after 16 minutes and then doubled his tally with a first time effort 10 minutes later as Barca prevailed 2-1 in what was a thorough examination at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.
Messi is favorite to retain the World Player of the Year award that he has won in the last three years at next month's FIFA gala.
