When it comes to selecting defenders for your Fantasy Premier League team, there are a number of factors to take into account.
Defenders get most of their points through keeping clean sheets, but signing those capable of providing a good number of assists and scoring a few goals can help your team no end.
Last season, Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne was the highest points scorer with 170, as he helped his side keep a number of clean sheets and weighed in with three goals. I'm not so sure he is great value at £7 million because Villa are a club in turmoil, with manager Martin O'Neill having left on Monday.
Patrice Evra (Manchester United) and Ashley Cole (Chelsea) are guaranteed to score points, and both cost £7.5 million. Evra clocked up seven assists last season, while Cole scored four goals and set up another four.
Liverpool's Glen Johnson is another terrific attacking full-back, also costing £7.5 million.
Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen scored the most goals of any defender last season (seven) and again costs £7.5 million.
Manchester City's Alexander Kolarov is a major threat from set pieces and should be the club's regular left-back after his big money move from Lazio. At £6 million he looks a good price, and playing under the conservative Roberto Mancini, should keep clean sheets.
Now that Ricardo Carvalho has left Chelsea, Alex should be the regular center back alongside John Terry. The Brazilian, a free-kick specialist, could be an astute signing at £6 million.
Cheaper alternatives include Stephen Carr (Birmingham, £4.5 million), Johan Djourou (Arsenal, £4.5 million) and Chris Samba (Blackburn, £5 million).
