I was interested to read quotes from the great Francesco Totti that he considered quitting the game in the wake of his kick at Mario Balotelli.
The Roma captain's 'tackle' was atrocious, one of those heinous acts you occasionally see in professional soccer, all the more shocking for its rare nature.
Totti was apparently provoked by enfant terrible Balotelli but there was nothing to excuse the extremity of the kick.
He was given a four-match ban and criticized in several quarters for the severity of the offence.
But to read that he pondered retirement was surprising because he has always been an individual who cared little for the opinions of others.
Despite his hot-headed nature, it is good to see that Il Capitano will be playing on this season.
