United With Work To Do

Manchester United were previously on a 16-match unbeaten run away from home in Europe. But on the evidence of their disjointed 2-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, it is hard to fathom how.

United took an early lead through Wayne Rooney, but Bayern dominated thereafter and got their reward thanks to a late deflected Franck Ribery free-kick and a goal from workaholic striker Ivica Olic.

Just like in the fortuitous 3-2 win over AC Milan at the San Siro in the previous round, United were wasteful in possession and overrun in midfield for long spells at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern and their creaky back line looked there for the taking, but United became less of a threat as the match went on.

Ribery demonstrated in fits and starts why several of the world's leading clubs are keen to sign him, as his mazy dribbling caused the Red Devils problems at times.

It was a surprise to see his fellow countryman Patrice Evra give the ball away so woefully for Bayern's winner, but hardly front-page news that Olic was on the end of it. The Croatian runs his heart out for the cause, but will never be a world class striker.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson looked disappointed in his post-match interview, but ominously for his counterpart Louis van Gaal, he stressed that United "will" be better in next week's return leg.

With the dazzling Dutchman Arjen Robben possibly back from injury at Old Trafford and Bastien Schweinsteiger returning from suspension, Bayern look set to be stronger at the Theatre of Dreams. Game on.
