Ronaldinho's third goal in AC Milan's 4-0 win over Siena on Sunday was not only his ninth of the Serie A season but also confirmation that he is returning to something like the form he demonstrated on a weekly basis with Barcelona.
The Catalans were desperate to offload him and Deco in the summer of 2008 as both were becoming disenchanted with life at Camp Nou. They were emerging as destructive influences in the dressing room, Ronaldinho's relationship with Samuel Eto'o in particular having deteriorated.
The Ronaldinho that joined Milan looked like a pale imitation of the player who lit up the noughties and was many critics' pick as player of the decade. I had the impression that the Rossoneri were acquiring a player someway past his sell-by date and his performances in the 2008/09 season reinforced this notion.
The Brazilian's displays were moderate at best, and he lacked that extra burst of pace that enabled him to get away from defenders. The tricks he used to wow the Nou Camp faithful were rarely coming off at San Siro, and stories of an active nightlife did little to endear him to the tifosi (fans). Indeed, one August evening, he was reportedly spotted out at a local hot spot by some supporters and told in no uncertain terms to return home and be more professional.
But on Sunday Ronaldinho scored his fifth goal in just two matches as his hat-tick against Siena came hot on the heels of a brace away to Juventus the week earlier. For me, those two goals from open play against another heavyweight club went someway to confirming his re-emergence as a top level player. And his third goal against Siena which flew into the top right corner from outside the area - his first such goal for the club - was more evidence that 'Dinho' is truly on the up. His overall display was also a joy to behold.
Yes, the days when he went past three or four players for fun look over, but he still possesses superb technique and remains capable of the kind of inventive pass that few of his team-mates see, bar Andrea Pirlo and David Beckham. His number of goals so far this campaign has come as a real surprise, and there are now reports that the club are looking to extend his contract.
Aside from his goals, Ronaldinho's performances have provided cause for optimism and it is great to see a genuinely world class player turning back the clock in this fashion.
