Felipe Melo was meant to be one of the missing links in the Juventus team, a man capable of transforming the Bianconeri into title challengers.
A US$30 million signing from Fiorentina, the Brazilian international was one of Juve's two big summer signings, with fellow countryman Diego the other.
So far, Melo has flopped, and to cap off a miserable first four months of the season, he has now won the Bidone d'Oro (Golden Bin), a prize commemorating the worst signing of the season in Italy. He polled 22.87% of the vote.
I watched Melo a few weeks ago in Juve's 1-0 win over Udinese and he repeatedly gave the ball away. His poor performance led to coach Ciro Ferrara replacing him with Momo Sissoko after 52 minutes.
I hear he was even worse in Juve's 4-1 home humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.
Melo looked a class act in last summer's Confederations Cup when his dynamic performances in midfield helped Brazil win the competition.
I have no doubt that the 26-year-old will find his form, as he cut such an impressive figure for Fiorentina last season, but he needs to start adapting to his new surroundings quickly.
As for Juve, they are in something of crisis at present, as defeats to Cagliari and Bari sandwiched that loss to Bayern. Ferrara is just cutting his teeth in management, and while Juve's board have shown patience to past coaches, there must surely be some very searching questions being asked at boardroom level.
