Yes, the Gold Cup still going on. Not that you would know it from any of the coverage. And honestly, some of the preseason games have been more entertaining than the Gold Cup. (Chelsea vs. Seattle, anyone?)
In any event, it's now at the semi-final stage and, predictably, everything is set up for a U.S.A.-Mexico final. The United States will play Honduras on Thursday evening before Mexico takes on Costa Rica immediately afterward.
But for all the insignificance of the tournament up until now, a US-Mexico final could be very interesting. The US will have the option of including several senior members of its full squad meaning the game could offer a teaser for the all-important World Cup qualifier between the two nations in Mexico City on August 12.
Mexico has been in quite a rut of late, but the Azteca stadium in Mexico City has always been their fortress. In 13 trips there, the United States has never won. But if the US can capitalize on its impressive Confederations Cup run, it might have a shot to turn that around and deal a critical blow to Mexico's hopes of qualifying for South Africa next year.
