Stand up if You Won the League...

Monday May 25, 2009

Now that all the European leagues are just tidying things up and preparing for a quiet summer of friendlies, here’s a quick look around at the league winners. Just so you don’t get caught at a cocktail party not knowing that Bordeaux or Marseille ended Lyon’s streak of seven consecutive titles or that Besiktas Istanbul is on the verge of clinching bragging rights in Turkey.

ENGLAND Manchester United

When they won it United clinched the title last week in the sweetest way — at least for them. They scrapped to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford against bitter rivals Arsenal to lift the trophy in front of their own fans and make the away supporters watch.

Who they shrugged off If United was going to win it, there was always going to be some combination of three teams behind them: Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal. The Gunners’ title challenge fell apart some time ago, while Chelsea’s lasted into the early spring. But down the stretch, only Liverpool could have caught United until a string of poor results scuppered their chances.

Are we surprised Not especially.

SPAIN F.C. Barcelona

When they won it Barcelona’s had a couple of weeks to revel in its success and focus on picking up two other trophies. They won the domestic cup and now they want the Champions League to complete their dominant treble season.

Who they shrugged off If you win the league in Spain, chances are you had to beat Real Madrid. And Barca did exactly that. Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, and Villarreal were in the neighborhood, but never mounted serious challenges.

Are we surprised Barca is arguably the best footballing side on the planet and could win the Champions League this week. That they get the business done at home, too, should never be a shock.

FRANCE Bordeaux/Marseille (TBD)

When they won it Bordeaux and Marseille ran away from the chasing pack this month and made it a two-horse race that will go to the final weekend of the season. Bordeaux is in the driver’s seat with a three-point lead, but both teams have similar goal difference, meaning that a Bordeaux defeat combined with a high-scoring Marseille victory would send the title to Marseille.

Who they shrugged off Toulouse and Paris Saint-Germain were surprisingly in the mix for a while, but it’s a far bigger deal that Lyon will finish third. They had won the seven previous French league titles.

Are we surprised You bet. Not one, but two teams managed to put an end to the Lyon dynasty. Maybe this will finally inject some excitement back into Ligue 1.

ITALY Inter Milan

When they won it The Nerazzuri ran away with the title by 10 points (and still have one more game to play). For the last month of the season, really, they’ve just had to cruise home. All their hard work was done during the winter.

Who they shrugged off Juventus and crosstown rivals A.C. Milan led the chasing pack, but it was nice to see Fiorentina finish fourth after about a decade of mid-table struggles.

Are we surprised Inter was about as likely to win the Scudetto as any of the other big teams, but it was astonishing that they did so in their first year under the self-proclaimed “Special One,” Jose Mourinho. Everything he touches really does turn to gold.

GERMANY Wolfsburg

When they won it Last weekend with a 5-1 thumping of Werder Bremen.

Who they shrugged off They only beat Bayern Munich by two points to prove the pundits wrong — they never fell away they way everyone expected them to.

Are we surprised Bayern has started every season of the past decade as favorite to win the Bundesliga title, so any time anyone else manages it, it’s definitely a surprise. But if you’ve followed Germany closely, you also know that Bayern is a very flawed outfit. And this season, they were simply beaten by a better side.

And a few others, just for the record...

Holland AZ

Portugal FC Porto

Austria SV Red Bull Salzburg

Belgium Standard Liege and Anderlecht are tied on points with one game left

Turkey Besiktas, Sivasspor, and Trabzonspor are in a three-horse race in the final weekend of the season. Can you handle the excitement?
