Alan's World Soccer BlogRomario Hangs Up His Boots (And Enters Our Hall of Fame) Brazilian goalscoring legend Romario has finally called time on his illustrious playing career at the age of 42 and in doing so has now made himself eligible for the About.com World Soccer Hall of Fame.
While the controversial little legend may take more pride in his World Cup winners medal or the memory of any of his 1000+ career goals (at all levels) I wanted to include him in our Hall of Fame not only for his incredible career spanning five continents of club football and two World Cups but mostly for my own memories of him at World Cup 1994. As a football mad 15 year old I was glued to the TV screen watching Romario and his strike partner Bebeto dazzle defences and watching audiences as they finally brought the World Cup back to Brazil after a 24 year absence. Romario was immense, strong, quick and deadly in front of goal and fully deserving of his Golden Ball award as player of the tournament. Congratulations on your career wee man, take a well deserved rest and maybe we'll see some of that old fire and drive on the touchlines soon as a coach.
