Is Avram Grant Out Of His Depth At Chelsea?

Football fans are notoriously fickle and Chelsea manager Avram Grant is finding out this week that the glory hunting Johnny Come Lately's that have infiltrated the Stamford Bridge crowd in recent years are as fickle as any you will find in European football.

As ungracious in Carling Cup final defeat as their manager, Chelsea fans, who only a few weeks ago were declaring "Jose Who?" as Chelsea maintained a four pronged trophy assault, are now turning on Grant in droves and questioning whether Roman Abramovich's close friend is really well qualified and experienced enough to lead a "major" European side.

Petty gripes about team selection last Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carling Cup final have the detectable whiff of sour grapes about them. Picking John Terry over Alex and Frank Lampard over Michael Ballack are the obvious moves that any coach, qualified or not, would have taken. Playing Nicolas Anelka on the attacking left side of a 4-3-3 formation is hardly akin to playing the Frenchman at left back as some vitriolic (and blinkered) fans would have us all believe and Joe Cole's omission was one of those decisions a coach with a squad overflowing with star names must inevitably take. There are only 11 starting positions available after all.

Ultimately I don't think Grant is as good as Mourinho and feel that his proximity to Abramovich has secured his place at the Chelsea table. Saying that however, I don't feel his lack of major league experience was his downfall last Sunday, Chelsea were simply outmanoeuvred and outclassed by a rampant Spurs side and credit should go to Spurs boss Juande Ramos rather than the pathetic, snide remarks currently being fired at Avram Grant from many ill educated corners of the Stamford Bridge "faithful".
